Today ward story

Assalamualaikum a dobry den!

So, today Dr Smolej brought me and my Internal Med groupmates to the ICU (czech = Jednotka Intenzivní Peče (JIP) ) unit of the Cardiology Department (after a long months in the Hematology and Oncology wards..hehe).

However, when we arrived at the ICU unit, we were greeted by a patient whom was being resuscitated by a group of doctors and nurses because the patient had VF (Ventricular Fibrillation). Okay, so my heart was pounding a bit at that time. It was my first time seeing a patient being saved. I was quite nervous imagining if the poor lady could not survive, but luckily she did.

Anyway, the resuscitation scene..oh, before I forget, if any of you do not understand what 'resuscitate' means, imagine the scene in the drama where the doctor applied the electric shock on the chest of the patient.

Where was I? Oh, back to the resuscitation story, it was really something for us. Imagine someone who is in a state between dead or alive, yeah, that was how we felt.

We were given a chance to see the patient closely after the resuscitation was done. She was in deep coma. There were soooooo many tubes coming in and out from her body. So many medication were transfused into her body. She was completely dependent on the artificial ventilator. It was heart wrenching to see her.

The poor lady is just 42 years old which quite young to be in the Cardio ICU unit.
A friend of mine just lost his father yesterday due to sudden acute heart failure.
A patient was just being admitted today due to sudden infarct of his heart.

and many public figures (footballers, actors, etc) fell down suddenly and died. Which most cases were due to acute heart failure.

So, even if you think that you are healthy, you can't be so sure.
From what I learnt in the Pathoanatomy lecture, this acute heart failure is sudden and deadly.
And the most fearsome factor is that you never know there is a problem actually exists in your heart.
(For more information, please refer to the lecture notes or Robbins textbook ^^)

Anyway, that's how God's work right? No one knows how, where and when we will die. It could be just anywhere, anytime, and due to any reasons.

Astaghfirullah..T_T

"Wheresoever you may be, death will overtake you even if you are in fortresses built up strong and high... "(Surah An-Nisa 4:78)
Assalamualaikum a Na Shle!

p/s: "Did you see the patient's body was jumping up to the ceiling during resuscitation? No, right? What they showed on the Medical Drama was totally nonsense!" -Dr. S.-
hahaha..^_^

aww, missed that scene though.tp kami tgk defibrillation utk pak cik yg ada atrial flutter. mula2, dia letak Jackson drug (propofol). then dia kasi letrik tu, zap/1terkejut kau even dah tau nak buat defibrillation. then kami boleh try hands on pump oxygen ke mulut dia, then bila tuen anis, dia terjaga.hahaha.it was quite an experience though. but most of the time, icu cardio isn't that hype.
